Raymond A. Hough Medicine Lodge ~ Raymond “Ray” A. Hough, 86, of Medicine Lodge, KS passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, KS. He was a former teacher and coach. He was born on August 23, 1927 in Perry, Oklahoma to Curtis R. and Ruth Ann (Elswick) Hough. Due to Curtis being a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine, Raymond and his mother made their home with his grandparents, Mrs. Hough’s parents, Ira and Nettie Elswick, for most of his early years. When Ray was near school age, Ira obtained employment at the Frank Phillips Ranch near Bartlesville, OK. Raymond attended a county school near the ranch and attended Jr. High in Bartlesville, until the accidental death of his grandfather Ira. At that time his grandmother and mother moved to Derby, KS where they operated the Derby Cafe. Ray attended Derby High School, graduating in 1945. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 2 years. He attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, graduating in 1952. While attending college he met and married his wife, Margarett (Lonker) Hough. He taught History and coached football and basketball in several Kansas schools, including, Patton Jr. High at Ft. Leavenworth, Mound Valley, Medicine Lodge, and Sharon. He and his family also raised Appaloosa horses and won numerous championships at the National level. He and his wife Margarett established and operated the Flying H Western Store in Medicine Lodge until 1983 when he taught, coached and was the Athletic Director at Medicine Lodge and Sharon until his retirement in 1993. Ray was preceded in death by one son, Dan Russell Hough and one grandson, Austin Hough. Surviving family members are his wife Margarett of 66 years, two children, John Hough of Clearwater, KS and Teresa Bailey of Medicine Lodge, KS, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, KS 67104. Funeral services will be on Saturday April 26, 2014 at 10:00 a.m at the United Methodist Church, 108 E. 2nd St., Medicine Lodge, KS with Pastor Dale Thiele officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, KS with military honors by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the Medicine Lodge High School Athletic Department, the American Diabetes Association, or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.
