Gale and Mary Carroll

January 15, 1922 - April 13, 2020

Mary Carroll, age 97, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020, at The Gardens at Barry Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Mary was born December 16, 1922 at Abdal, Nebraska to Anton and Marie (Anderson) Damm. Gale Carroll, age 98, passed away Monday, April 13, 2020, at The Gardens at Barry Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Gale was born January 15, 1922 in Wakefield to Noah and Vera (Sheppeard) Carroll. Mary Damm and Gale Carroll were united in marriage on November 24, 1941 in Belleville. They were married for 78 years. Mary preceded Gale in death in January 24, 2020. Gale was Reunited with his bride less than three months later. Mary and Gale lived in Pratt from December 1941 to May 1948. They returned to Pratt in August 1959 and remained until they moved to the Kansas City area in October 2018. Gale and Mary were members of the First United Methodist Church in Pratt. Mary worked in the Pratt County Clerk's office, was clerk of the Selective Service Office in Pratt, and retired from the Farmers Home Administration, Pratt office. Mary was a member of the PTA for 21 consecutive years. She was also a volunteer on the Election Board/Ward Supervisor, and a volunteer at the PRMC Auxiliary. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters. Gale was in the United States Army European Theater during WWII as a Sergeant in the 458th Ordinance and drove a tank retriever in Normandy, Northern France, Belgium, and Rhoneland. After the service Gale joined his father and brothers in NC Carroll and Sons Gravel Company which supplied gravel for the Pratt Airbase and Highway 61 to Hutchinson from the sand and gravel pit south of Pratt. Gale also farmed in Kansas, ranched in Texas, operated a dozer service, and farmed in Mississippi. Gale retired after 24 years as Park Superintendent for the City of Pratt. Gale was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary; 2 brothers; and 2 sisters. In addition, Gale and Mary were preceded in death by a son and his wife, Raymond (Francis) Carroll; 2 grandchildren, infant Jonathan Jorns and Marie Jorns Cotter; and step-grandchild, Shannon Jorns. Survivors of Gale and Mary include son, Roy Dean (Rita) Carroll of Leavenworth; daughters, Sue Ellen (John Paul) Jorns of Pratt and Cynthia Dawn (Dennis) Owca of Highland, Maryland; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grand-children; 1 step grandchild; and 2 step-great grandchildren. Visitation with family will be from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020 followed by a Memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt with Jan Blasi presiding. Inurnment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt. Memorials may be made to PRMC Axilliary or Pratt United Methodist Church in care of Larrison Mortuary.
