Dorine Vinice Allphin

April 25, 1922 - November 27, 2020

Dorine Vinice Allphin, 98, died November 27, 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Dorine was born April 25, 1922 in Coats, Kansas to Ira Gordon Faulkner and Vinice Lucille Schooley Faulkner. During her early childhood, Dorine lived in Bartlesville, OK and Arkansas City, KS. In 1925, the family returned to the Croft-Springvale area, where Dorine attended the one-room schoolhouse at Croft through the eighth grade. She graduated from Coats High School in 1939. On August 30, 1940, Dorine married Calvin Allphin in a secret ceremony at the Coats Methodist parsonage. Charles and Phyllis Cooper stood up with them and accompanied them on their honeymoon to Hutchinson, KS, where they all stayed with Dorine’s aunt and uncle. Calvin and Dorine first lived with Calvin’s parents before moving to a three-room house three miles south of Coats. They returned to live with Calvin’s mother after his father’s death in April 1946. Their son, Mike, was born September 7, 1946. In 1950, they moved to a house four miles south and two miles west of Coats. Their daughter, Deana, was born October 21, 1952. In the spring of 1968, they moved to the Baker ranch south of Coats, where they enjoyed 27 years. Dorine loved taking care of her yard and flowers, and she loved the creek that ran through the property. She enjoyed everything about living on the farm and in the country. Dorine was a phenomenal cook and baker who loved nothing more than taking care of people and cooking for them. She loved keeping house and making a home, and she took up-and was good at-knitting, crocheting, tatting, needlework, sewing, quilting, painting, making ceramics, and countless other types of crafts. Dorine loved being a part of the Coats community and belonging to various clubs and organizations. She was a founding member of the 20th Century Club and earned a 60-year recognition from her EHU unit. Dorine was a member of the Coats Grace Methodist Church and was in charge of its kitchen, where she organized more than 50 years of dinners for holidays and funerals. Those kitchen ladies were very special and dear to the community. In 1995, Calvin and Dorine left the ranch and moved to Coats. Calvin died May 15, 1999. Calvin and Dorine enjoyed boating, camping, and traveling with friends. They participated in the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Pageant for many years and loved being involved in centennials, parades, and other events throughout the state with their covered wagon and teams of horses and mules. They enjoyed life and loved each other. And they leave behind their lifetimes of stories and memories, and the best of times and the hardest of times shared with a loving family and wonderful friends. In 2011, Dorine moved to Parkwood Village in Pratt, and in 2018, to Pratt Health and Rehabilitation. The staff and caregivers there became family to her. They enjoyed her wit and orneriness, and she loved them. Dorine is survived by her son, Mike (Marchelle Holmes), of Hutchinson; her daughter, Deana (Ed) Lenkner, of Coats; six grandchildren and their families: Paul Simmons (Christine Haynes) and Paul Andrew, Presley, Reghan, and Briley of Hays; Tami (Steve) Clark and Brendon of Lawrence; Steve Allphin (Shannon Briles) and Brandi, Alyssa, Emily, Isaac and Laikton of Pratt; Judy (Lenny) Zimmerman and Sydney and Payton of Kansas City, KS; Travis Lenkner (Erin Delaney) and Jack and Greta of Chicago, IL; and Darrin (Jenna) Lenkner and Cooper, Coby and Briggs of Pratt; and nieces Terry (Jerry) Penley and Ann (Dean) Zemp. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; her brother, Harold L. “Bus” Faulkner; and two nephews. Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday, November 30, 2020 at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt. Due to COVID, a private burial will be held in the Coats Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later time. Memorials may be given to the Pratt County 4-H Foundation or the Pratt County Food Bank, in care of Larrison Mortuary.
