Mary June Poland

ISABEL - Mary June Sleeper Poland, age 84, passed from this life on March 27, 2012 at Via Christi Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Mary was born at Cream Valley, Nashville, Kansas on August 5, 1927. She was the daughter of Victor and Lulu Tabor Sleeper. Mary was a homemaker, friend, and neighbor in Pratt and Barber counties. After graduating from Isabel High School Mary worked as a secretary in McPherson, Kansas. She married Don Poland on August 20, 1946. They were married for 61 years. Children of the family include Dianne and husband Bill Buggeln, Augusta, Rita and husband Howard Kendall, Edmond, Oklahoma, Richard and wife Anita Corbin Poland, Isabel, Gregory and wife Janet Storey Poland, Edmond, Oklahoma, Brian and wife Tammy Strack Poland, Isabel, Kendall and wife Rhonda Blasdel Poland, Sublette. These children blessed the family with 18 grandchildren, Family of Dianne & Bill: Cheri Buggeln Lech, Eric & Shannon Buggeln, Michelle & Bert Bair, Evan & Jaclyn Buggeln, Family of Rita & Howard: Jama & Steve Shoemaker, Jonah & Denise Kendall, Family of Richard & Anita: Brandon & Jan Poland, Heather & Paul Smith, Erin & Kent Simpson, Family of Greg & Janet: Jennifer & Michael Zezas, Holly & Wes Adair, Tyler Poland, Family of Brian & Tammy: Bryn & TJ Vera, Zachary & Laura Poland, Jordan & Brittani Poland, Family of Kendall & Rhonda: Duane Poland, Bradley & Amanda Poland, and Todd Poland and 26 great-grandchildren, Teri & Alexandra Lech, Kylie, Taegan & Tanner Buggeln, Elizabeth Mathias, Abigail Bair, Kale & Kase Buggeln, William & Abraham Shoemaker, Kaya & Deign Kendall, Bailea, Faith, Regan, Zebediah & Quinn Poland, Corbin, Camryn, and Callan Smith, Isabel & Reese Simpson, Blythe Zezas, and Drew Poland. Mary continued to live at the family farm tending to birds, pets and plants until her final day. Mary has been a member of the Isabel Church of Christ, Barber County Cattlewoman, Pratt County EHU, Pratt County 4-H, and Stitch/n/Chatter Club. The family farm in was honored in 1991 as a Barber County Soil Conservation Award winner. Mary loved cooking, cleaning, working in the yard and quilting. She was a homemaker who enjoyed working to keep her family clean and well fed. It is reported that community members commented, “Mary’s kids always look like they stepped out of a bandbox.” She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister and brother in law Helen and Warren Hamm, and sister Kathryn Elliott of Mulvane, numerous nieces and nephews and community friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Don Poland, by brothers, Robert Sleeper, Clifford Sleeper, Floyd Sleeper, Milton Dwight (Jiggs) Sleeper, and Lowell Sleeper and by sisters, Dorothy Thom, Betty Myers, and Elsie Smith. Hospice care was important to the family during Mary and Don’s last days. The family suggests that memorial donations be sent to a Hospice Center of your choice (Hospice Care of Kansas, South Wind Hospice, Harry Hynes at Via Christi, etc.) or, Silver Maple Camp in Kingman, Kansas which was the camp attend by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given in care of Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124. Condolences may be left for the family at www.larrisonmortuary.com. Funeral services will be held at the Isabel Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 31st, where she worshipped with her husband and family for over 70 years. Services will be led by family members with son-in-law Bill Buggeln presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 30 at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt, Kansas.
